Hi Lauren,
I live in Dayton, OH. My 6 year old daughter and I have just received food intolerance test results showing we are gluten intolerant, as well as dairy, and the nightshade group (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, etc). I cannot have any type of cane or beet sugars and she can't have almonds, cinnamon, cherries or green peas! We have been mainly wheat free for a long time, but I have always baked with spelt. I see that so many of the gluten free products/recipes have potato starch that I'm getting discouraged quickly! She's talking about wanting to make holidfay cookies, and I don't know how! Do you have any recipes for cooklies that are gluten and potato free?
Thanks, Linda

Hi Lauren, I live in Ohio. Wellsville. South of Youngstown and north of Steubenville. It appears you are in Columbus? I'm new to this group and I have not been diagnosed but I have little doubt. Would love to get recipes.

Hi to all you celiac's in Ohio. I'm from near Pittsburgh Pa but come to Ohio to shop gluten-free!!!!.For baking I've been having great luck with B.Hageman four bean flour 1 to 1 ratio and no added gums....I use my old recipes and just use the gluten-free flour mix.

To Linda & Leah

I know of a guy in or near NIles Ohio that will get rid of the night shade allergies. My total family went to him and it does work for allergies but No he can't fix celiac's before someone askes!!!!If you are interested pm me and I'll give you his info.

To the cook with all the recipes ( sorry I forgot your name) do you have a recipe for making stromboli? In my wheat days I used to eat stromboli made from Rich's frozen bread dough. I have thought about trying it with the Gillian's frozen pizza dough...Any suggestions would be appreciated..

Hi, I am in Centerville Ohio and my son has Celiac Disease. He has known for about a year and is 12 years old. What's your favorite pizza? Any good restaraunts in the area for gluten-free eating?

Hello all! I am in Canal Winchester. I drive all the way to Dublin Whole Foods or Upper Arlington Wild oats fairly regularly to get some decent foods. Maybe we could meet there for a gluten-free lunch sometime. Its nice to know I'm not alone here!

I grew up in Centerville!! I go up every year to march with the alumni band in the Americana Parade!! smile.gif

I live in Mason now. Near King's Island.

I like Bonefish Grill. I think it's about a 20 minute drive from Centerville. It's the Tylersville Rd. exit off 75. They have a gluten-free menu and great food. I think you have a Carrabas up there ... I also think they have a gluten-free menu.

Lauren, it's very nice of you to offer to cook!!

What area of Cincinnati?

There's also a celiac group here and they're having a picnic the end of the month. It might be a good way for you to meet people.

Well, for now I am staying off-and-on in Newport, but I'm not sure where we will end up living exactly. I am driving back-and-forth to Michigan these days. I would love to meet people in Cinci. It seems like it will be a nice place to live.

Columbus has a Wild Oats and now a Whole Foods in the suburbs. The Whole Fodds is on the north side in Dublin, which would be closer to you. Its an amazing place with quite a gluten-free selection to choose from. They have a nice gluten-free freezer in the bakery area that has things like muffins and pizza crusts.

I just found out about this on another forum... its a Celiac conference here in Columbus. Maybe we could all meet up there??

There is a Raisin Rack in Columbus (outskirts or Columbus ) , they have a hugh selection.
The conference is on Nov.4 2006 . I go every year......It's $30.00 if you register before Sept.15th,(I think) I don't have the brochure in front of me.$35 after that date.

To anyone attending the Columbus Conference.

I posted this someplace else on this site also but wanted to give a heads up. Everybody Eats will be at the conference this year. They ask that if you want any of their food items to phone or e-mail them in advance with your order.

Also can anyone tell me if Hilliard is close to the conference? I'm searching for hotels!!!!!

thanks

mamaw
KrisT
I've never had anything rom Everybody Eats. What do they have that's good?

Hilliard is probably not the closest spot you could get, but if the price is right its only a 15-20 minute drive.
mamaw
Hi Kris

Go to their website & check it out. We love their crusty rolls & baguettes.... I havne't had anything not good from them. Their stuff is up in the high range in goodness.I know several on this site agree with me. jmunchin & lauren for a couple...Their things are pricey but I don't eat them up everyday . When I first received the crusty rolls I opened the pkg. & I could have ate the whole bag at once. My mom who is not gluten-free loved them too.......Pizzas & ravoili also are yummy.... Cream puffs were good but I like celiac specialities better.

Since I waited so long to book a hotel -the downtown ones I checked on were booked. I just can't justify $300.00 for a bed for a night. We run all day Friday so we are not in the room only to sleep...... We were told it was twelve miles!!!!!!

can you give me the address of the Wild Oats? I know of Raisin Rack - is there any other places that have a good selection of gluten-free stuff?

Thanks for all your help....... As I look at your pic I swear I saw you there last year with a group of three or four girls......

KrisT
I did go to their website and emailed them. the pictures make their food look so incredibly yummy!! Very pricey though. I'm waiting till the holidays to get the expensive bread machine so maybe I can start making something decent at home.

It probably is only 12 miles, but you have to navigate through downtown from Hilliard. Its just the lay of the land. Try looking in Pickerington. Its a straight shot down the freeway to Children's without having to go downtown.

The Wild Oats is in Upper Arlington on Lane Ave. just west of the OSU campus. They do not offer a very big selection though. I do not go out of my way to go there like I do Raisin Rack or Whole Foods. Our Whole Foods in Dublin is supposed to be one of the biggest. It has a gluten-free section in an aisle and also a gluten-free freezer section near the bakery. But they also have tons of gluten-free foods mixed in with the regular stuff.

I must have a twin out there. : ) I just found out I was GI this summer. I didn't even know about the conference last year.

Hi Kris

Thanks so very much for the info,I truly appreciate it.

thanks for the info I thought about that road & couldn't remember how far away it was from Children's..I was so diappointed in the Doubletree before so I thought I would go elsewhere this year. Since we get there early on Friday I shop til I drop on Friday & then gone from hotel before 6:30am so I just can't justify a pricey room . I do like clean & safe but I'm just a normal person so a three star will work for us. When I actually have to spend time in the room I get the best......
I'll be checking that hotel out...... wish you could be there...............
For me this is like going to Vegas!!!!!!!!!!! go with cash come home broke!!!!! At least this one I have food.......

thanks again

They should have a gluten free menu at the Hostess stand or the manager will be able to get you one from the computer.

I keep it simple -- I like a nice Ahi Tuna (Grilled Rare) with Fish MArket Mashed Potaotes and Steamed spinach. They have other veggies if you like and a baked potato among other things...

The halibut is also excellent -- every day, they have around 10-15 different types of fish that they fly in -- you can have them grilled, steamed (SHanghai Style - bring your own soy sauce), sauteed, baked, pan-seared, etc -- Good fish and great potatoes!

The House salad is also gluten-free (no croutons) - the poppyseed vinegarette is yummy!

For appetizers, you can always get the shrimp cocktail, raw oysters, oysters rockefeller, ahi tuna app,

Here is their gluten-free Menu

I have got to remember to take this info with me the next time I go to my GI in Columbus. I was just there a week ago and forgot all about your tips on Cameron Mitchell's restaurants, until we were on our way home. I usually just come home hungry from Columbus because I don't know the area very well. One time we did stop at Outback just off of 270.

I have copied and saved all the tips you have posted here about Columbus and next time I will be armed and ready! (probably within the next few weeks)

Thanks!

again thanks for your kindness. And wow what a menu....I guess I will be having the alaskan crab legs for sure...... I all halibuted out!!! I still have about 30# left from my Alaskan 3 month tour from last summer. We are going back in 2009... I love salmon so I'll be ready to go in 09 -I only have two 8 oz fillets left....
I know we will not be having the tuna, when we were in Philly in July we ate at McCormick & Smick-- had tuna & got food poisioning.... It's hard to eat that food again once that happens....

Wish you could also be at the conference..........I usually spend my dough at the conference buying for my freezer since I can't get much where I live....BUt me too I love the other places you mentioned but I try to forget I'm close to them!!!! Mind over matter I guess or maybe no mind doesn't matter. Either way works for me.......

This thread started out discussing who else lived in Ohio... well, count me in.
I am in North Royalton (a SE suburb of Cleveland). I noticed someone else was from Brunswick, which is very close to here. I figured there must be more gluten-free persons in the region, though on the other board I spent time on, there only seem to be a couple members in Ohio.

I plan to attend the Columbus conference on 11/4, though after putting in my reservation (over the phone) I have yet to recieve confirmation by mail as promised. Anyone else know how long it takes to get something in the mail? I still need to book a room in Columbus, since I do not really want to get up at 6am and be all tired when I get there, but I don't want to book a room until I have confirmation in hand.

I am located in Strongville Ohio. I have just been diagnosed with Celiac Disease. This is the first time I have been to this website and am impressed with the amount of information that I have found! It is very upsetting for me right now having to change my entire diet and what is even more aggravating is that I keep getting conflicting information on what does and doesn't contain gluten.
KrisT
I have a question about the conference. Is this the kind of thing that you can arrive at whenever and just spend time doing/seeing what you want, or is it an actual sit in a lecture all day type of thing? I'm confused even after talking to the hospital about it on the phone. Would someone who has been before please tell me what to expect! I have a huge Grand opening party that I am hosting the night before and would love to be able to sleep in a little bit if possible.

Thanks!
mamaw
Kris.

The food vendors are out in the main areas , that opens at 7:30 am for business. This is where you can purchase items from the vendors listed in the brochure plus I think two other vendors that got in after the brochure was printed. Some of the more popular vendors sells out in late morning & sometimes leaves if they have nothing else to sell.So if your looking to buy I suggest be there by 8:30 am so you can get what you want to purchase. To me it looks like a mad flea market with everyone tasting & buying trying to get everything they came for. Alot of the people that come are from outlying areas where it is hard to buy anything gluten-free. If you are not concerned with buying the lectures start at 9am. I don't alway sit in on all of them. Some years the speakers are wonderful & others I just pass.
Last year they ran out of goody bags for everyone ( they give them away with info & a few samples in them).
I see they are having two lunch times & I don't know how they will determine who goes when .
For me I like to be able to buy stuff I can't get around my home plus I can shop at Raisin Rack . It's a nice way for my husband ,me & our daugther to get away for some quality time & its her birthday 11-4 so we alway have fun st the conference. I also enjoy meeting people.
For newbies the lectures are very helpful if they are about something that perks your interest....
For us we are very clear about no gluten no matter what so we like the vendors. Having to feed children whose interest in food is challenging at times I'm alway on the look-out for better quality & taste to keep them eating & enjoying their foods...Plus I have people call on me to help them with what's good & what's not.
So arrive when you like & enjoy the conference.....

welcome to the board

Yes, I agree it seems very confusing at first. Please take your time with it, it will keep getting better & easier with the new rules the mfg's must put on their labels. Kraft & some others are very good about stating exactly what's in their products....If you are having a specific problem feel free to pm me & I'll try to help you.It is a new life style so maybe start out by using simple things you know for sure are gluten-free then start adding a few a week that way it isn't so confusing to take in a tad of info at a time.
I started out with naked foods (notta nothing on them) & built my diet from there. Lots of fish, chicken & veggies,&fruits...
You might consider the columbus conference if they still have openings. There you can buy some goodies to keep sustaining you while you learn.I think for us it was the sweets & breads that we were afraid we would never have again. But beleive me we have found great things..
Also. Annalise Roberts has a wonderful cookbook caled gluten-free classics. then there is a new book coming soon from Mike sans gluten that his wife made. I have that one on order. Mike is from Cleveland.I think if I remember his book can be ordered thru SURE Talent Books......

Thank you so much!! I feel better now knowing that I can relax a little bit. My first intention is to have taste trials. I am sure one or two of the lectures will interest me since I am new at this, but I spend so much time researching on the net that I don't feel like I really need them. I did place an order with Everybody Eats... I can't wait!!!
mamaw
Hi Kris

you are very welcome. I agree with you about the lectures. I'm not overly interested in them this year!

You will be surprised at how good the Everybody Eats rolls are!!! I just wish they were not so pricey..I just made garlic bread with the baguettes......I use their challah bread for french toast.
also if you haven't had celiac specialities glazed donuts make sure you get them. the closest to the real deal I have ever tasted. They also have mac & cheese that is good- made from heartland marconi products.

hope to meet you there...

mamaw
mamaw
Hi Mike

Glad you finally got that taken care of. I don't sit in on every one either because some just don't interest me.
That's not because I think I know to much but I'm at a point where I know we can not have gluten & we all are good about that so now I focus on the best of foods out there.....

I'm not even sure if a pill comes along that we will even try it... I think we will stay just as we are that way no one gets their hopes up & bam has to go back to gluten-free again ....

I am in Brunswick, between Cleveland and Akron. It is pretty discouraging to me because there is nothing near me that is gluten free.

Don't be discouraged!!! I grew up in Wooster and recently moved to Kettering which is just south of Dayton. The best resource for you to tap into there is the Mustard Seed Market. There is one in Akron and I'm pretty sure there is one in Cleveland as well. They have lots of gluten-free products and some great fresh baked items too. Also there are alot of restaurants there as well since more chains are starting to offer a gluten-free menu. As for our resident cook here that started the thread, you are an inspiration! I wish the ability to cook and create recipes came as easily to me. I am in Columbus pretty frequently and was wondering if anyone could reccomend good restaurants that my husband and I could stop at for dinner. We have been to Cheeseburger in Paradise which was delicious but I"d love to mix it up a little.

For those of you in the Dayton area I would encourage anyone interested to attend the Celiac Support Group at Miami Valley Hospital. I went to my first meeting this past week and it definately has an older base of members. It would be great to see some young faces in the mix, or we could just have our own party, lol!

I'm quite sad that I won't be able to go to the conference in Columus this year. It seems as if it is all sold out and I missed the bus. OH well there is next year, and who knows, maybe I'll get lucky and there will be a cancellation!

Hello all! I am in Canal Winchester. I drive all the way to Dublin Whole Foods or Upper Arlington Wild oats fairly regularly to get some decent foods. Maybe we could meet there for a gluten-free lunch sometime. Its nice to know I'm not alone here!

I just saw your note that you are in Canal Winchester. We live in Carroll. We are closer to CW. I have had Celiac for 10 yars. My 10 year old son is being tested right now for Celiac. It's nice to know that someone is this close. How long have you been diagnosed?

Megan

I live southeast of Columbus in Carroll Ohio. I have been diagnosed with Celiac for about 10 years.

Hi Teebs

The conference was good.... I was a little disappointed in the luncheon, plain & without flavor. If I was new to this & thought or got excited about having a flavorful gluten-free lunch I would habe been very upset... The brownies for dessert were so dry I could have lamed or killed someone with one of those bricks. I really felt sorry for the new ones coming on board.I think a kid could have done better but that's my opinion & the opinion of may others...
The lectures were good & some interesting too!!!! Sometimes overkill is the best way I can describe it. But for new people I think it was a great learning tool..It's not that I know to much but I'm at the point where I know we can not have gluten so I've moved on & I focus on finding the very best in gluten-free foods for my family....Ican't change our immune system so I've learned to live with its ups & downs. I think we all get to this point at sometime.
I love the vendor part. Since I can't alway find what I need close to home I can get it at the conference or at the Raisin Rack Store so that's makes me a happy camper.
And I love the fact that you can talk with others who are in the same boat...I love people.....

There was a new vendor from Michigan who had some new mixes. It is called Tastefully Gluten Free. The owner is Sheri Dunatchik. I didn't sample her cookies but her pizza crust mix was one of the better ones. Enjoyable!!!What caught my eye was she had a recipe for a gluten-free type stromboli on her display. I've been craving a stromboli!!!!She has a website so check it out.
Anna from gluten evolution was there & I must say her pumpkin bread mix is excellent. She is a great friend & of course her bread mixes are my favorite.
Everybody Eats did get to attend & they were a great hit. They sold out quite quickly but of course you can order online from them.I was the one who bugged the Children's Hospital to let them come.
Celiac Specialities were a big hit too , as always..... Debbie brought alot of help with her.......

The new cookbook from Sure Talent Books is a very nice cookbook. The pictures make your mouth water. And they are not enhanced pics , they are the real deal....I have the cookbook & I would recommend it. This book & the one from Annalise Roberts are excellent. The book from sure talent is called Gourmet Desserts. It would make a nice Christmas present.....Mike & Laura Eberhart are the gluten-free wizards who produced these eye appealing & great tasting recipes. Just a regular family trying to survive in their new gluten-free world.. She is not celiac but her love for her hubby has challengeed her to make recipes that are as close to wheat recipes as possible.Nothing like a happy mate!!!!!!So after using family & friends , celiacs & non celiacs her desserts became favorites of both worlds so they decided to print their specialities.

I did learn that there will be a new forming conference in March 06 in Rootstown, Ohio. It sounds like one I will attend.. You can find info at this site:www.CDconferencehomestead.com I think Dr Peter Green si going to be speaking.

I attended just long enough to shop. I have to say Anna's pumpkin bread is to die for!!! I was dissapointed in a lot of the samples and just overly tired from an incredibly busy week, so I opted not to stay and listen to any lectures. I did enjoy reading through all of the packet and would really love to have someone fill me in on any important new breakthroughs that might have been discussed.

Overall, I would not go back to the conference unless I do decide to listen to the lectures someday. I think that people who live in areas where they don't have access to foods in local stores really benefit greatly, but because I live near a Wild Oats, Whole Foods, and Raisin Rack, I do not need to spend the money just to go and shop for foods that I can easily come by.

Hey Kris

What do you think about the stuff you purchased from Everybody Eats???? I was a tad disappointed this year. I loved visiting but I'm with you about some of it. I paid because I hope some of it goes to research... In fact I paid for three of us... I don't think I will do it again. Maybe just for one of us. We really didn't get alot out of the lectures. great for new ones tho....
Did you happen to get a business card that was being passed out for the new cookbook??

Did anyone eat at the Columbus Fish Market? If so, did you enjoy it????

Hi Broncobux

We were going to but by the time we got finished shopping at Whole Foods, Raisin Rack, & Anderson's we were starved so we just had steak salads at a place in that area... I forget the name of it. We only stayed one night so maybe next year. I was really hungary for red crab legs too!!!!!
I found Bard's Tale Beer at Anderson's $10.99 a six pack... now I can make beer batter onion rings from Mike Eberhart's new cookbook....
