My husband is gluten intolerant (we don't think at this point that he's full blown Celiac...it's a long story). He also has other intolerances such as milk, citrus and vinegar. He's not handling this well and I'm wondering does anyone know of a Celiac chapter or a place we can go in Roanoke, Va to find help with where to eat, etc?

We've gotten creative with cooking at home (well sort of) but eating out is a real bear for us at this point. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

I live in Blacksburg, VA and teach at Virginia Tech, so I go to Roanoke occasionally. In Roanoke, Nature's Outlet has a nice supply of gluten-free foods, as does the Co-op across from the Grandin Theatre (though I prefer Nature's Outlet). I've heard the Outback in Roanoke is pretty good with handling gluten-free food. However, I was severely glutened at the one in Christiansburg, so just be careful if you go to that one. There is a support group that meets on Tuesdays (I believe the third Tuesdays in a month) at the Montgomery Regional Hospital in Christiansburg, but I haven't been to a meeting. Sorry I don't have more info about eating out--I don't eat out at all since I was glutened at the Outback here, so I just go to health food stores and buy what I need and cook myself.

Hello! I am new to this board also, and a little new to the celiac diagnosis, (august 05), but I have one restuarant you could go to that I have personally been to that were ver y accomodating to my needs for gluten free food. Its Nicos on Cambell street downtown. They are a new italtian restaurant and they have a great chef that new exactly what gluten-free meant, even made some potaoes specially for me as one of my side items and they told me they can prepare almost anything htere gluten free. My advise would be to call ahead and make sure the chef is on duty and make sure they know what your needs are. But my experience there was great and they were really nice to me about it and didnt make me feel like an alien from outerspace or something like most people do when I ask the about gluten free so I hope that helps! I know it can be frustrating to feel like you can not even go out to eat , so if I find any more good places I will let you know on here and please do the same! I seem to have the best luck with places that have a chef! good luck to you!
