Had an ob/gyn appointment today. I suspected a cervical cyst, because I do NFP/FAM and check my cervical position every day. I felt a new, hard, strange bump on my cervix, but my books say that is normal and not to be alarmed.

Anyway, my doc brought it up in the appointment and said (during a sonogram of my ovaries to check on strange pain...) that he could see nabothian (sp?) cysts, and I said "is that what I felt on my cervix?" and he said "Uh, you probably felt something on your vaginal wall, but not your cervix, cause that is way up there" and I thought, duh! Hello! I don't know why he thinks HE can reach it, but I can't ?!?!

Anyway, silly doc, I just ignored him, cause he really answered my question, so whatever, he can think he knows more about my own cervix if he wants to !

Just thought I would share that funny story with you!

I actually had a cyst on my cervix and had to get it cut off. The doc gave me valium ... I never take meds, but I took two of them. This doc has delivered a couple of my kids and we've known him for 15 years, so he let Adam stay with me because I was nervous. I chattered away the whole time and kept complaining that it hurt. He said it couldn't hurt too much, I hadn't stopped talking since I got there! I said that if he wanted me to be quiet he should have prescribed Demerol instead of Valium. He got the last word, he said he'd remember that next time!

That's really good you can check your cervix ... I taught NFP for seven years and have never checked mine, yet I coached women on how to do it all the time!!

I don't know what these acronyms are? I suppose I could use wikipedia...but you guys are better -- what the heck are you talking about?

NFP stands for Natural Family Planning. Today's methods are much different than the rythm method taught in the 1960's. Today's symto-thermal methods using temperature, mucus, and cericial signs is proven in government studies to be 99% in actual use (the pill is 94%, 99% in theory). Some studies vary, but only if they use unmotivated people ... obviously, if you have relations during the fertile time, you have a high chance of getting pregnant.

Yeah, and I really really advocate this method (and thanks for the help carla!). I feel so much better about my body without all of the hormones messing things up.....and *knowing* my cervix makes me feel more in control. Natural Family Planning/Fertility Awareness Method has been really neat to learn about (I got the book, Taking Charge of Your Fertility, and signed up for local classes through CCL -couple to couple league).

Anyway, I just thought my doc was so....whats the word....closed minded? Eh well, whats new....

I agree, I'm really sold on it, too. I always find it funny when someone is wondering if they're pregnant ... I know whether I'm pregnant or not!! There are method failures, but there is with any method except abstinence.

I have the same cysts, Tiffany. My doctor mentioned them at a routine checkup a couple years ago. She said that they were very common and no problem. Me, being me, started asking questions! I asked what they were, how I got them, etc. She literally stood there and just looked at me--and then repeated bla bla.. a high percentage of women... bla bla

Tiff, I swear, you attract the dumbest doctors! (including mine, I guess)

I can't believe he doesn't think you can reach your cervix!! This is why I have a female ObGyn only policy

FAM is actually quite simple...you'll get used to it quickly. I used FAM before and during the years DH & I had our kids (don't need any such methods now ) I especially liked knowing exactly what was going on with my body/cycles...and knew each time I was pregnant (all three pregnancies were planned) based on fertility signs rather than needing to take pregnancy tests. FAM also helped to time for conceiving our daughter (after having two boys.)

Thanks for sharing, that is really good to know! I have found simular info on the web, so I am not going to worry. For all I know, I had them all the time, and just didn't have them the last 2 months that I have been charting, and so this is "normal" for me to have them.....Anyway, thanks!

I can't reach my cervix . . . not that I can tell, anyway! And I've tried! I really would like to use the NFP methods, but I think my fingers are just too short . . . I can never tell what's going on in there!

Edited to say: Right after posting this, I checked my "View new Posts" list, and saw my name on the "CBS celiac Story" thread . . . for a second I panicked and thought I'd posted this in the wrong place . . . what a shock that would have been for those who were expecting to hear about a national news story! And what a relief when I double checked and found I'd posted it in the right place after all! Whew!

I'm glad somebody asked the question because I was reading along but had no idea what any of this stuff meant.
I guess I'm not in touch with my cervix at all.
I was trying to figure out what this topic had to do with pregnancy??? Now I know...and thanks for spelling it out to those of us who are a little "unaware".
I'm not trying to get pregnant but when that time comes this could be useful to know about.

You do not have to check your cervix for NFP to be 99% effective. I do not check mine, and I taught it for several years. The women who do check it, really get a lot from that particular sign, but the women who don't, don't seem to miss anything. My charts are very clear without it.


This is used both to try to achieve pregnancy and to avoid it. I've used it for about 14 years.

I was told I couldn't get pregnant at 26 years old. I'm now almost 30 and lost twins in February, after feeling low about "what I did wrong" I found out I had Celiac. (actually there where three sacs and two babes) I was told that they died when it was time for them to live off the placenta because the celiac disease depleated the nourishment they needed. I had lost all hopes but remembered about what I had read up on previously about Natural Family Planning. I read about Benadryl and Robitussen and how it can weaken the mucus making fertility easier. I also learned about checking my cervix. I was able to tell I was pregnant in February (twins) before I even took a test because I could tell my cervix was closed. Today, I took a test because I found it closed again and YEAH, I'M PREGNANT!! Paying attention to your body can help you and tell you alot.
It's given me advanced notice of my pregnancy so that I can make sure I'm getting the right nourishments to the baby a.s.a.p.
Although, I bring up to certain people about how I know I'm pregnant and I tell them that my cervix is closed and most of them are in awe that one can find the cervix. (What makes it even better is that I know all the ones that thought it was weird and impossible to find your cervix probably went right home and dug around until they found it!!)
