Have you ever had the feeling that you wanted to somehow, magically, make someone else a celiac (or other food allergy) and then give that food so they understand? I know it's really mean and everything, but sometimes they just don't get it!

I've seriously had people tell me it was psychological, or try and feed to it me to see what would happen! One person has even said she was allergic to everything but brown rice and greens, but through meditation (and a bunch of other stuff like that) she can eat everything now... right... you had true allergies! And it’s not just with wheat!

It was the worst in public school (I homeschool now) when I would be just about the only kid bringing my own food (especially in the later grades.) I'm not super ultra sensitive, like airborne doesn't bother me too much, nor does accidentally touching it (assuming I don't go a lick my hands or something LOL) but things like using the same spoon, dish, knife, stuff like that, odes bother me. I always feel stupid if I go to a party or something and ask people to be SURE to scoop dip on to their plate, THEN dip, and then assuring them I'm not some crazy OCD girl who thinks they'll double dip... sometimes I just give up.

It's rather annoying at times, worth staying gluten-free and such, but yeah...

Am I alone in wishing other people could better understand what glutening does to you? (Not saying I want other people to be ill, just, I don't know, understand!)
j_mommy
Yeah it's a bummer! Especially when it's family doing/saying those things! Sadly I think people who do/say things like that aren't going to change and I just ignore it now! It still sucks though!

I'm totally with you. My dad (and I'm 39 years old) always acted as though I was just being difficult or something, exaggering things. Then he got diagnosed with it too (DH - the skin instead of the digestive tract) and now he acts as though no one understands him. Just two months ago he was harassing me. The irony is, he's not as careful as I am, so he's already glutened me since he went gluten free (he insists on eating Quaker Oats, even though I've told him over and over they have gluten). Arg.

So now I've gone raw. I figure, if you're going to be a weirdo, just go all out. Raw food all the time, that's my motto. I'm taking raw food to Thanksgiving dinner. Ha.

Good luck.

p.s. sorry to barge in on teen section. I was a teen once...long ago.....

Stargate,
I get it! It is actually really funny because 2 of my friends are now going gluten free because they are having possible Celiac related health problems! They were the most unsupportive about my Celiac dx, but in time they came around. I am not saying your friends will do this, but it was just really funny when they called me for advice on going gluten free!!

Bully4you,
I am raw too!!! I agree, if you're going to go all out, may as well do it 100%...right!!!?? I had really good raw lasagna tonight! I am able to eat things I thought I never would have been able to eat again...like lasagna!

i don't think that it's that they're being mean, but they're just curious. i get tired of it too. then i feel like i want to bite their head off or something. but sometimes, people do want to be mean, i have it happen to me all the time. they taunt me with food and try to make me eat it. don't get deprresed though, i can get depressed enough for the both of us.

you like stargate???? i'm obsessed with stargate!! stargate SG-1 or Atlantis?!? i like SG-1 best. i'm happy that sam joined atlantis, but i hate the fact that they totally changed her character. she's so different... sad.
who's your favorite person?! i like daniel jackson and colonel shepard.
okay, i'm done freaking out about stargate.

.::STARGIRL::.

ps. what other shows do you watch??? have you ever heard about Eureka or Journeyman??

ok. i'm done now.
HilaBean
Trust me i've been there too. Imagine if its YOUR DOCTOR telling you that its in you head. Thats just messed up dont you think? But yeah that happened to me. I finally found out that i'm gluten intolerant (I dont even know if i'm flat out celiac for fear that nothing's going to be covered by insurance) from a natropathic doctor after years of chronic illness.
Some people are just ridiculous though. They don't get that eating gluten can kill people who have celiac. Thanksgiving was a nightmare this year. :/
Stargate_geek
Ack I know! Thanksgiving was a bit of a nightmare. My dad works in the medical field. Every year the clinic does thanksgiving together. Which is great, they all know about celiac (well, most of them) and watch what they put in food for my mom and me.... but they don't think "can't use the same spoon' or 'Be careful about the flour on the counter" so I got glutened... dry.gif

Stargirl: You could say I'm obsessed, but that'd be an under statement wink.gif I originally have Atlantis, but now i like it more. My favorite characters are Carson (*tear*) and Rodney, then Radek.

Yes, I love Eureka too, haven't seen the other one.

I know how you all feel. It was kind of nice last weekend to be visiting with relatives with two children with allergies. They actually GOT it. My nephew's wife was forwarding recipes for me to check out, listing ingredients of products she wanted to use, and the like.

I'm a Stargate SG-1 fan too. I don't seem to watch Atlantis as much. I think I have to get some complete seasons from Netflix, because I think I'm missing some of the story arc.

My daughter is studying Egyptology in college now (she also was homeschooled). I kid her that she will have to use Daniel Jackson's ideas for one of her theses biggrin.gif She just wants to find a guy in the field that looks like him laugh.gif It is funny how they work so hard to find names that have some ancient Egyptian basis. Like Naqada? The name of a predynastic culture.

Have you two fans ever watched Babylon 5? I think that is my favorite show ever. It is something you do have to watch in order. The five-year story arc was largely planned in advance, characters change, etc.
Stargate_geek
Haven't watched babylon5 , but it's on my netflix list!

I homeschool too. It's great! I can write fanfiction and stuff for English! smile.gif I start college soon though, my major will be 'get into Medical School'

First yes here is yet another adult bursting into the teen section laugh.gif

Stargate this happens to us all at some point, people are generally ignorant about anything not directly effecting them.... hopefully your close friends are not like this.

Become a teacher and find a way to explain to those closest to you how this diet works... the rest of the people will either come around after a while or not, just be careful and realize you are probly healthier than they are!

Oh, and stargate SG-1... great show when I can watch it.....

atlantis, havent watched yet

babylon-5 started in the middle so it made no sense but may watch a few of the begining ones and see now that I know!
hathor
Ooops, I missed the "teenagers only" part. sad.gif I usually look at the titles of new posts instead of looking at particular boards.

I can see how Babylon 5 would make no sense in the middle. There is quite a bit of back story. Just knowing who all these people (and assorted aliens) are, how the races have dealt with each other in the past, personal histories, plot developments, etc., etc. really have to be seen to be absorbed. I started watching when it was into the second season. Thank goodness for Netflix!

Aww man you got glutened? That happened to me too... They made 2 different kinds of turkeys, One that was marinated without gluten, one that was cooked with teriyaki sauce. They put them on the same platter. *headslap* I did have gluten-free cornbread though... And pie. yay pie.
My dad, of all people, gets the fact that I cant eat gluten the least of every one. He gets toast crumbs in the butter so that i cant use it, He uses my toaster for his gluteny things, and he wont even touch my food just because its gluten free. its obnoxious.
Stargate_geek
they made three turkeys, two of which we gluten-free. One was a Cajun spiced deep fried one (in new oil, so i know it wasn't that) and then a plain just-the-bird turkey. I can't think what it was though. I had turkey, some mashed potatoes (asked what was in them, and they were real potatoes too!) a rice dish (homemade, they knew what went in it, it was clean) artichoke dip, which was gluten-free, and the pie WE made.... so idea how i got glutened....

My family is good about the gluten-free, the problem is when other people come over! We always scoop out the butter, then spread it, stuff like that. We have a four slot toaster, my sister labeled it 'Gluten free' and 'real' LOL She's the one that refuses to eat the gluten-free food though, she says it tastes weird... when you haven't had gluten (on purpose) in 6 years, it tastes just fine wink.gif
