CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT COELIACS MEANS AS THIS IS WRITTEN ON THE BACK OF WALKERS CRISP PACKETS EVEN THOUGHT SOME OF THEM CONTAIN WEAT AND MILK???
j_mommy
As far as I understand that is just a different spelling for celiac.
mak07
ye but how can the crisps be celiacs suitable when they contain wheat and milk proteins?
j_mommy
Does that kind contain wheat ect???? You said in your previous post that some do(and I would guess some don't)

Not knowing exactly which package you were looking at, I went to their website and some list wheat and some don't. If one is listing wheat but still says safe for celiacs, it cold be a ppm threshold.

Also, just because it calls out milk (or milk proteins) doesn't mean it is NOT safe for celiacs . . . Not all celiacs need to go dairy free.

Maybe you could tell us the ingredients you are questioning(besides the obvious of wheat ,rye barley, oats).
mak07
so can someone explain too me what coeliac means as i am getting confused as far as i no a coealic person should not include wheat in there diet and the walkers salt and vinegar packet crisps states on ingredients monosodium glutamate from wheat andsays it is suitable for coeliacs???????/

http://walkers.corpex.com/CR15p5/nutrition/qa.html

"Some ingredients can be derived from wheat or barley but are safe for people with Coeliac disease. This is because they are highly processed and the gluten content is negligible."

That quote is from the page at the URL given. I'm not advocating that anyone knowingly eat any amount. The question I'm answering is why they say it, not that they are correct in saying.
j_mommy
Monosodium glutamate(MSG) does not usually contain gluten if teh product is made in the US. MSG is not wheat(it throws you off with the glutamate).

Call/email the company if you are unsure.

Sorry...didn't catch teh part that says their MSG is from wheat....that as a pervious poster said could be a parts per million situation. Where there MSG falls under a certain PPM amount and is there for "safe" although I wouldn't eat it if it said that.
