Back in the days when I thought I was just intolerant of corn and soy, and approaching 50 while being overweight, I started the Nutri-System diet program and also had devised for me a workout plan that worked around my various injuries. I was determined to be fit and fifty.

So I bought all those processed foods in the little boxes, most of which contained gluten, gluten and more gluten, along with a few veggies and a bit of protein, but mostly gluten because those other things are too expensive. Of course, back then, I called them carbohydrates and not gluten! (different perspective).

So of course I had a lot of bloating and gas and diarrhea, and first became a full-time consumer of GasEx.

But I worked out like a demon, stuck to my diet, had diarrhea on the trail a lot which caused lots of problems (once I even had to knock on someone's door and ask if I could use their toilet--boy was he suspicious of me even though I left my dog outside, probably thought the dog would attack him if he tried to get away from me, lol), and I lost 30 lbs and ended up two days before my 49th birthday fit and fabulous. Also, much more susceptible to gluten than I had ever been before as I look back on it. But even then it didn't click. It is only in retrospect that I realise that it was all those little starchy boxes loaded with gluten that finally overloaded my system.

Anyway, the day before my birthday (to make it into a sad tale) I had a head-on auto accident, smashed up my right foot which was on the brake, ended up with a knee replacement, and gained all the weight back because I have never been able to exercise again (can't swim, ride a bike, exercise walk, have hip problems as well as knee and foot) so it was all for nought.

But someone really should do something about those food-in-a-box weight loss programs because they are really bad for you!

I had to laugh when I read this, because I am newly diagnosed and have been thinking the same thing: "It's not the carbs, it's the gluten, stupid!" Always did wonder why I felt so much better on the Atkins diet!
